Our hens are happy hens, spending their life roaming free in their barn or outdoors when they choose. Their natural diet is varied, consisting of grains, grasses and whatever bugs they happen to capture along with fresh air and sunshine, weather permitting. We are careful to avoid medications and chemicals in their feed mix.
Eggs for breakfast,
eggs for lunch,
eggs for supper,
and in your baking.
Eggs are an exceptional, complete, and nutritious addition to any diet.
We've been producing all-natural, pastured-raised eggs for over 25 years. We started with the intent of producing healthy eggs for our own family, sharing the surplus with family & friends.
Klasse Woods Natural Farm is dedicated to producing healthy nutritious chicken, providing you with an enjoyable experience of superior flavor and health. Taste the difference when you try Klasse Woods' Pasture-Raised Chickens. You won't want to go back to traditionally raised chicken.
We start our chicks first thing in spring with a mid-summer finish date. We pick up our chicks as day olds. Newly hatched chicks need a very controlled environment to ensure a vigorous and healthy life. So they spend the first two - three weeks in our warm brooder sheds which are kept warm and dry.
After the first few weeks all our chickens are raised in safe portable pasture shelters that get moved to fresh pasture daily. Fresh air, sunshine, and greens are a veritable salad bar of health served up daily. The pasture gives them the opportunity to eat large amounts of greens providing plenty of nutrients. Chickens by nature eat a lot of seeds and grain. For that reason we do provide them with a grain ration of carefully chosen grains and minerals for best health of our flock.
We want our birds to be happy and healthy. Raising them in small groups of 100 or less means a lower stress level, which means happier healthier chickens.
Our chickens are sold whole and frozen. Birds range in size, growing in a normal healthy way; no force feeding, just natural growth.
As we only raise one batch per year, we recommend pre-ordering as many chickens as you think you can use in a year.
We try to raise everything on our land beyond organic principles. More than just meeting the minimum requirements of using no chemicals, which is simply avoiding a negative, we strive to create a positive. A synergistic composite of soils, plants and animals with optimum health! All of that health gets passed along to you through the foods grown here at Klasse Woods Natural Farm.
Two factors add to the benefits of this tasty prairie fruit:
1 - It's ability to produce in our zones gives it the quality known as "northern vigor" translates to a lot of concentrated nutrients.
2 - This fruit is relatively new to the prairies, thus diseases and pests are few allowing for pure growing conditions.
Cherries have quickly become a permanent part of our family diet. Their intense flavor, color & nutrition make an excellent addition to any menu. Eaten fresh, in season, the cherries are tart yet sweet enough to enjoy. When frozen & then thawed for a few minutes, the taste is very similar to the fresh picked taste. Cherries offer superb nutritional benefits - their true deep red color indicates their intense benefit to the heart, blood, liver etc. A mere 10 cherries per day offers full health benefits. The sour cherries are a cooking cherry with many uses in cherry juice, jams, jellies, desserts, breakfast dishes & toppings.
In the spring of 2009 we planted 300 Dwarf Sour Cherries. In 2013 we saw our first harvest of about 50 lbs. This year (2024) we have been blessed with a reasonable crop. A fruit fly variety which loves these cherries has migrated to Manitoba now, making the fruit difficult to grow. When trees are producing well we can expect more than 20 lbs/tree.
We sell our cherries in season, or frozen and pitted in 2 LB tubs, as long as our short supply lasts.
The breeding of dwarf sour cherries began in the 1940's. After some 50 years of breeding, Dwarf Sour Cherries were born combining cold hardiness, dwarf stature and good fruit quality into the final product. The cherry varieties released by the University of Saskatchewan are a great tasting cherry with a high sugar content.
We have three varieties of the Dwarf Sour Cherries. The majority of our orchard is "SK Carmine Jewel" which was the first and highest producing of the sour cherries. As well we have some "Romeo" and "Cupid" both of which are slightly sweeter, larger, and bear later than the "Carmine Jewel".
It is prairie hardy, growing & producing well in most soil types.
